Women in History – Grace Hopper (1906-1992)
WaveLink, Inc. proudly commemorates Women’s History Month by recognizing the pioneering contributions of famous women in math and science. This week, we’re highlighting Grace Hopper, who wrote the first computer manual, A Manual of Operation for the Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator, in 1946. After teaching mathematics at Vassar, she joined the Naval Reserves and became a lieutenant. She was assigned to the Bureau of Ordnance’s Computation Project at Harvard University, where she worked on Mark I, the first large-scale automatic calculator and a predecessor of electronic computers.
